Consortium

In the project funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWK), the Open Source Business Alliance, the Gesellschaft für Informatik (Society for Informatics), the Öko-Institut (Institute for Applied Ecology), as well as adesso and Siemens, collaborate in a consortium to create an assessment platform that provides detailed and transparent information about the ecological footprint of software applications.

ECO:DIGIT, led by the Gesellschaft für Informatik, is primarily responsible for the assessment methodology and the compilation of the required measurement data, in collaboration with the Open Source Business Alliance, the Öko-Institut, and Siemens. The IT service provider adesso focuses on developing the digital testbed that aggregates and analyzes all data. This includes the development of the architecture and user concept, as well as the selection of suitable technologies.

adesso focuses on the development of the digital test bench, which aggregates and evaluates all data. The tasks of the IT service provider also include working on the architecture and user interface concept, as well as selecting suitable technologies.

The Oeko-Institut has been conducting research into energy efficiency and resource conservation within digital systems for more than 10 years. In the eco:digit project, it is responsible for the methodology and overall assessment. It is also helping to test the test bench and develop a reliable simulation of environmental impacts of software.

The German Informatics Society acts as the consortium leader in the project and takes on project coordination. Its tasks also include standardization and dissemination of project results.

The Open Source Business Alliance (OSBA) provides an interesting alternative to the traditional hyperscale model with the Sovereign Cloud Stack and specifically works in the area of cloud measurement. Through affiliated companies PlusServer and ScaleUp Technologies, the project has direct access to cloud data centers via OSBA.
