Digital technologies as both drivers and burdens for environmental sustainability
Digitalisation faces a key dilemma: on the one hand, digital technologies are essential for the green transition; on the other, their own environmental footprint is growing exponentially. The ICT sector already consumes 2.1% of global electricity – a figure set to rise due to AI and the IoT. At the same time, 42% of digital emissions remain invisible in GHG accounting standards, as they are attributed to other sectors as ‘grey emissions’.
From 2026, companies will be required to transparently document their IT infrastructure under the CSRD. The question is no longer whether, but how digital systems can be assessed. This is precisely where the ECO:DIGIT collaborative project comes in: it develops and tests reproducible methods for measuring the environmental footprint of digital services – as an open-source solution for all.
