EnviroInfo 2025 is the 39th edition of the long-standing and well-established international and interdisciplinary conference series on leading environmental information and communication technologies. Combining and shaping national and international activities in the field of applied informatics and environmental informatics in making the world a better place for living, the EnviroInfo conference series aims at presenting and discussing the latest state-of-the-art development on ICT and environmental-related fields. 

The topic this year - Open Data, Open Science, and Open Society - promotes transparency, collaboration, and inclusivity in addressing global challenges. By freely sharing data and research, innovative solutions are fostered and informed decision-making is encouraged. Together, we can build a sustainable future by uniting communities, researchers, and policymakers for collective action.

Jens Gröger from Öko-Institut e.V. will give a talk there on 19th September, 11:30–12:00, demonstrating how our ECO:DIGIT methodology can quantify the environmental impact of digital services—even at the edge.

Jens will showcase a practical example: a Raspberry Pi generating a continuous video stream, akin to a surveillance camera. Using ECO:DIGIT, we calculate its full life cycle footprint—energy use, greenhouse gas emissions, resource consumption, e-waste, and hazardous substances—and illustrate how different technical choices, from local pre-processing to cloud transfer, affect the results.

This talk highlights how ECO:DIGIT allows us to compare technical variants, optimize hardware and software, and make digital services environmentally transparent, fostering continuous monitoring and a race toward the most sustainable solutions.
