ECO:DIGIT Featured in RESET Online Magazine
As part of the dossier “Digital and Green – Solutions for Ecological and Fair Digitalization”—funded by the German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU)—we spoke with the online magazine RESET about the challenges and solutions of our ECO:DIGIT project.
In the context of the dossier “Digital and Green – Solutions for Ecological and Fair Digitalization” (funded by the German Federal Environmental Foundation, DBU), our colleague Teresa Zeck (Gesellschaft für Informatik) discussed ECO:DIGIT with Benjamin Lucks from RESET. In his recently published article on reset.org, Lucks explores how complex the life cycle assessment of modern software has become—and why it now extends far beyond local devices.
In the article, Teresa Zeck explains ECO:DIGIT’s approach: “We link software usage with environmental factors—from energy consumption and e-waste to water and raw material usage.” A particular challenge is allocating resources in cloud and edge computing environments, where processing power is often shared.
A concrete example cited in the article: While Microsoft Office 1989 ran locally, today’s cloud version requires its ecological footprint to account for data centers, data transmission, and network infrastructure. ECO:DIGIT uses “digital twins” of software to forecast energy consumption and environmental impacts—a method also becoming relevant for AI systems.
