Review of the SCS Summit: A step towards digital independence

On 14 May, the annual Sovereign Cloud Stack (SCS) Summit took place at the Villa Elisabeth in Berlin. The event was a gathering of the SCS community for the presentation of the latest developments in the field of digital independence and the discussion of future plans and visions. The SCS allows cloud users to freely choose and easily switch providers without additional costs or training. This flexibility is particularly important as Germany and Europe lag behind in digitalisation and are heavily dependent on US platforms. The SCS aims to create an independent, secure and sustainable cloud infrastructure using open standards and free software.
In a presentation at the Summit, Lena Hoffmann and Christoph Streit introduced ECO:DIGIT and explained how the project contributes to the creation of sustainable, transparent and digitally sovereign cloud environments by integrating comprehensive environmental analyses into SCS environments. A key component of ECO:DIGIT is the use of open source technologies to enable the detailed examination and analysis of cloud environments. This provides the transparency needed to accurately assess and reduce environmental impact.

Im Rahmen eines Interviews auf der Konferenz betonten Jens Gröger vom Öko-Institut e.V. und Christoph Streit von ScaleUp Technologies GmbH & Co. KG ebenfalls die Bedeutung von Open-Source Projekten wie ECO:DIGIT. Dabei unterstreicht Gröger, dass das Umweltthema zunehmend an Bedeutung gewinnt und es deshalb essenziell ist, nachhaltige Praktiken auch in der digitalen Sphäre zu etablieren. Streit ergänzt, dass die Entwicklung und Nutzung eigener Standards es Unternehmen ermöglichen, flexibler auf gesetzliche Anforderungen zu reagieren und die Umweltbelastung genauer nachzuvollziehen.

In a conference interview, Jens Gröger of Öko-Institut e.V. and Christoph Streit of ScaleUp Technologies GmbH & Co. KG also emphasised the importance of open source projects such as ECO:DIGIT. Gröger stressed that environmental issues are becoming increasingly important and that it is therefore essential to establish sustainable practices in the digital sphere. Streit added that the development and use of their own standards enables companies to be more flexible in their response to legal requirements and to track their environmental impact more accurately.
The SCS Summit therefore provided not only an opportunity to discuss technological advances, but also to raise awareness of environmental responsibility regarding cloud usage. The event highlighted the importance of combining digital sovereignty with sustainable and green practices.
